The crash happened around 11:35 a.m. Tuesday, Jan. 14. A 17-year-old traveling southbound at a high rate of speed in the northbound shoulder of Bayshore Road struck a municipal trash truck turning right onto east Atlantic Avenue, the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office said.

The truck driver told investigators they saw the dirt bike approaching quickly as they attempted the turn and tried to stop, but the bike collided head-on with the truck, coming to rest in front of it. Witnesses confirmed the driver’s account, stating that the truck was moving at approximately 5 MPH and had come to a complete stop at the time of the collision.

The investigation included scene documentation with a Faro scanner and photographic evidence. Surveillance footage from a nearby camera also captured the incident, backing up the driver’s and witnesses’ accounts.

The 17-year-old died as a result of the crash.

The investigation remains ongoing. Authorities urge anyone with additional information to contact the Cape May County Prosecutor's Office at 609-465-1135 or submit an anonymous tip through CMCPO.Tips or the Cape May County Crime Stoppers at 609-889-3597.
